Black Clock #7
Black Clock #7 is out, though not yet (as of now) on their website. I like how it says in the hard copy (just below the masthead) that it’s “published semi-annually under the cover of night by the California Institute of the Arts.”
I’m not that crazy about my excerpt because excerpts make me feel weird and out-of-contexty, but as an impartial reader I have to say there are some pieces in it that I really, really LOVED — most notably Joy Nicholson’s “Manson Girl” and Grace Krilanovich’s “Warlock,” both excerpts. I’m looking forward to Krilanovich’s first novel “The Orange Eats Creeps,” which I hear is kinda-sorta about teen vampires.

What else? After a humongous delay (I’d ordered it last Christmas!), issue #5 of The Ganzfeld is finally out. The theme this time is “Japanada!,” a survey of drawing culture in both Japan and Canada. The first (Japan) half is interesting, containing often-lecherous doodles and comic strips from the 1920s onwards that had an impact on how manga and anime is drawn today. The second, Canadian, half’s a tad bland — or maybe just too familiar. Oh well, in any case the cover’s very pretty and it’ll look nice on the coffee table for months to come.
