“This striking photograph was taken in 1930 by Colonel Boles, the first superintendent of Carlsbad Caverns. The photograph was taken during the summer solstice, when a dramatic shaft of sunlight penetrates deep into the cavern for only a few days each year. The figure in the picture is Colonel Boles’ young daughter.”
